Explanation
To say that something happens on a date, German uses the dative with the am (= an + dem): Ich habe am ersten Mai Geburtstag. (My birthday is on the 1st of May.)
- am always signals the here, so the ordinal takes the dative ending -en: am ersten*, am zwanzigsten* Mai.
- Compare the naming form () with the "on" form (): der erste Mai → am ersten Mai.
- The month name itself does not change: am dritten Juni*, am zehnten Juli*.
More examples:
- Wir treffen uns am zwanzigsten Dezember. - We're meeting on the 20th of December.
- Am vierundzwanzigsten Dezember ist Heiligabend. - Christmas Eve is on the 24th of December.
Common mistake: don't drop the -n: it is am ersten Mai, not am erste Mai.
