What it means

beziehungsweise (almost always abbreviated bzw. in writing) is a coordinating (nebenordnende) conjunction. It has three closely related uses:

1. "or" / "and/or" - offering an alternative that is equally valid:

2. "respectively" - distributing paired items to two subjects in the same order:

Forms and grammar

• Indeclinable. It never changes its ending; there is nothing to conjugate or decline.
• No case government. Unlike a preposition, it does not force a case on the following word - each element keeps whatever case its own role in the sentence demands: vom Vater bzw. von der Mutter (both dative, because of von), not because of bzw.
• Coordinating word order. It joins two elements of equal rank (two nouns, two phrases, two main clauses). It sits between the two parts and, like und and oder, occupies "position zero" - it does not count as the first sentence element and does not move the finite verb. When it links two full main clauses, each clause keeps normal verb-second order: Die Sitzung wurde verschoben, beziehungsweise sie wurde ganz abgesagt.

When to use it

Use bzw. in formal or written contexts (notices, contracts, instructions, academic prose). In everyday speech people usually just say oder. Reach for the "respectively" reading when you list two subjects and then their two matching values in the same order.

Most common mistake

Learners sometimes treat it like a subordinating conjunction (weil, dass, obwohl) and push the verb to the end of the clause. It is coordinating, so the verb stays in second position: say ..., beziehungsweise sie wurde abgesagt, never ..., beziehungsweise sie abgesagt wurde.
