Definite article 'die' (the, feminine, accusative)

Feminine 'die' does not change in the accusative. It looks exactly the same as in the nominative, so there is nothing extra to learn - just keep die.

Use die for a feminine noun as the direct object:

• Ich kaufe die Lampe. - I am buying the lamp.
• Ich sehe die Frau. - I see the woman.
• Ich brauche die Tasche. - I need the bag.

Compare the two cases - the article is identical:

• Nominative: Die Lampe ist neu. - The lamp is new.
• Accusative: Ich kaufe die Lampe. - I am buying the lamp.

Remember: in the accusative, only the masculine article changes (der → den). Feminine, neuter and plural all stay the same.

Common mistakes:

• Inventing a special accusative form. There is none for feminine - it stays die.
• Confusing feminine die with plural die: both look the same, but the noun and the verb tell them apart (die Frau ist vs. die Frauen sind).
