Explanation
After the indefinite article (ein/eine) the follows the mixed . Because ein sometimes has no ending of its own, the has to show the gender instead: -er (m), -e (f), -es (n).
| masculine | ein guter Mann | einen guten Mann |
| feminine | eine gute Frau | eine gute Frau |
| neuter | ein gutes Kind | ein gutes Kind |
The same applies after kein- and the articles (mein-, dein- …).
- Das ist ein schönes Haus. - That is a beautiful house.
- Ein neuer Tisch steht im Zimmer. - A new table is standing in the room.
- Ich habe einen guten Freund. - I have a good friend.
Common mistakes: In the masculine the must carry the -er the lacks: ein guter Mann, not ein gute Mann. The masculine then switches to -en: einen guten Mann.
About Adjective declension after the indefinite article (nom./acc.)
After the indefinite the shows the gender ending the article cannot: -er (m), -e (f), -es (n).
Mixed : the marks gender where 'ein' can't. Masculine becomes 'einen guten Mann' (-en).
Nach dem unbestimmten zeigt das das : -er (m), -e (f), -es (n).
Caution
Because 'ein' has no ending, the adjective carries it: 'ein guter Mann', 'eine gute Frau', 'ein gutes Kind'.
