Adjective + preposition: 'abhängig von' (dependent on, + dative)

The adjective abhängig (dependent) governs the preposition von with the dative. As von is always a dative preposition, the case is fixed.

• Das Kind ist abhängig von den Eltern. - The child is dependent on its parents.
• Der Erfolg ist vom Wetter abhängig. - Success depends on the weather.
• Viele Menschen sind abhängig vom Smartphone. - Many people are dependent on their smartphones.

The von-phrase commonly contracts with the article (von dem → vom) and can precede abhängig: Sie ist von ihrer Familie abhängig. The opposite is unabhängig von.

Common mistakes:

• Translating English "dependent on" with auf - German requires von.
• Using an accusative after von (always dative): abhängig von den Eltern, not von die Eltern.
