Servus

hi / bye (Bavarian-Austrian greeting and farewell)

Origin

A traditional, rather intimate greeting in the Bavarian-Austrian language area, used both to say hello and goodbye. It goes back to Latin 'servus' (servant, slave) - a shortening of the polite formula '(I am your) servant / at your service'. Today it carries no submissive overtone, simply a friendly, casual sense.
