Mashallah

An Arabic expression (ما شاء الله, 'ma sha'a llah' - 'as God has willed') originating in the Qur'an (Sura 18:40); it traditionally serves as praise and at the same time as protection against envy and the 'evil eye', and is also used by Christian Arabs. In German youth slang 'Mashallah' is mostly used non-religiously as spontaneous praise in the sense of 'great', 'awesome' or 'wow' - e.g. after a sporting success or as an online compliment.
