jemandem die Show stehlen

to steal the show; to upstage/outshine someone

Origin

A loan translation of English 'to steal the show' from theatre jargon: someone who grabs the attention (and applause) on stage through excessive effort 'steals another's show'. The older German form 'die Schau stehlen' was modernised via the English word 'show'.
