Origin
Borrowed from Arabic حَبِيبِي (ḥabīb-ī, 'my darling'), composed of ḥabīb ('darling, friend') and the suffix -ī. In German the word has been sporadically attested as an exotic loanword since the second half of the 19th century. In today's youth slang it has become a common, affectionate form of address for a dear person or close friend ('sweetheart', 'my dear').
