From English slang ('silly, clumsy, dopey'); the meaning is often linked to the clumsy Disney character Goofy, who has appeared since the 1930s. In German the had already circulated among young people for some years and then enjoyed a revival. With around 39% of the vote, 'goofy' was chosen as Jugendwort des Jahres 2023 by the Langenscheidt publishing house (ahead of 'Side eye' and 'NPC').
