Bratwurst

Literally 'Bratwurst' is a fried sausage; as a jokey, harmless insult for a clumsy or useless person it draws on the old German tradition of culinary insults. Its main model is 'Hanswurst', which Wiktionary records since the 16th century as a coarse-comic stage figure and, by extension, 'a foolish person not to be taken seriously'. In this sense 'Bratwurst' sits alongside milder mocking terms like 'Lauch' (leek) or 'Pfeife' in youth slang.
