based

based; admirably true to oneself, unbothered by others' opinions (approving internet slang)

Origin

Anglicism from US internet culture. The word originally derives from 'basehead' (a crack/cocaine addict) and 'freebasing' and was pejorative. Rapper Lil B reshaped it from the late 2000s onward - calling himself 'The Based God' - and gave it a positive sense: praise for someone who confidently and independently stands by their stance, regardless of what others think. Online 'based' often serves as the antonym of 'cringe' (and partly of 'woke').
