Bahnhofskino

'Bahnhofskino' (literally 'station cinema') is a compound of 'Bahnhof' (station) and 'Kino' (cinema) and historically referred to the cinemas situated near train stations that showed cheaply produced genre films, newsreels and, from the 1970s on, increasingly sex and action films. It became a synonym for 'Schmuddelkino' (sleazy cinema), i.e. trashy, lurid entertainment. By extension the term is now used jokingly for an absurd, chaotic or embarrassing scene that one watches like a trashy B-movie.
