Atze

buddy, mate / 'bro' (friendly Berlin-area address; also 'big brother')

Origin

Berlin slang (also used in the Ruhr region) for 'brother, buddy' - and at the same time a friendly form of address among mates, similar to 'Digga'. The word originally denotes the (older) brother or sister; Wiktionary traces it as a transfer from the 'atzen' (to feed). Today it is mostly used in a chummy, familiar way.
