Alman
stereotypical (über-)German person; spießig, rule-obsessed (ironic, often self-mocking)
Origin
'Alman' is the Turkish word for 'German' and ultimately traces back, via French 'Allemand', to the Germanic tribe of the Alamanni. Through guest-worker migration from the 1950s and 1970s onward it became established in German, and in migrant-influenced youth slang it exaggerates stereotypically German traits like punctuality, pedantry and a love of rules. It gained wide recognition through the Instagram account 'Alman Memes' (since 2017); it is mostly mocking and ironic, often even self-deprecating, and linguists regard it as satire rather than a genuine racist slur.
